At A Glance
Phaphama Health Institute NPC is a proudly South African non-profit company based in the Eastern Cape, working at the intersection of research, data, community development and public health. We are on a mission to transform how non-communicable diseases (NCDs) — such as cancer, hypertension, diabetes, heart disease, and mental illness — are understood, prevented and managed in under-resourced communities.
Our Vision
A South Africa where every individual, no matter their background, has access to the knowledge, care and support needed to live a full and healthy life, free from preventable disease.
Our Mission
To lead community-based public health innovation through research, data generation and health promotion focused on non-communicable diseases.

Our Approach
- We collect and analyse data on NCDs in under-researched communities
- We estimate survival rates, trends, and risk factors
- We evaluate what works — and what doesn’t — in real-world health interventions
We don’t believe in one-size-fits-all approaches. Instead, we listen to communities, work with local leaders and elders and respect the cultural nuances that shape health behaviours and decisions.
We honour healing as a process that includes emotional well-being, ancestral continuity, intergenerational care, nutrition, storytelling and education. Our workshops, food coaching, awareness campaigns and dialogues are designed not just to inform but to uplift, reconnect and empower.
